Job Description
The award-winning American Repertory Theater is seeking a Producer for a direct hire role in Cambridge, MA.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting directly to the Executive Director (ED), with additional reporting responsibilities to the Artistic Director (AD), the Producer is a key member of senior staff and leads the teams responsible for directly overseeing and executing A.R.T.’s core artistic programming in alignment with the mission to expand the boundaries of theater.  The Producer is responsible for facilitating and overseeing all artistic projects, including management of creative relationships and budgets related specifically to productions and developmental workshops and resource allocation.  The Producer is a critical collaborator throughout the lifespan of these projects, which often move beyond Cambridge and into the world, establishing the groundwork for future success and advancing the ART brand to audiences on Broadway and around the world. A.R.T.'s artistic programming and development, under the leadership of the Artistic Director, is co-curated by the Associate Artistic Director, the Producer, and the Director of Artistic Programs & Dramaturg in response to the Artistic Director’s vision. In alignment with the organization’s value of collaboration, this team utilizes a shared leadership model of consensus decision-making, collectively programming a roster of artistic activity that serves the mission and values of the A.R.T.Â
PRODUCING
Producer will have direct oversight of the entire artistic department cross-seasonal budget while also collaborating with other members of the senior artistic team to curate artistic projects that support the earned revenue goals of the A.R.T. As such, the Producer will:

- Collaborate with and support the vision of the AD and senior artistic team for show selection and season curation
- Directly plan and supervise all artistic projects.
- Routinely report on the status of the department budgets to the Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee.
- Manage and facilitate communication between the artistic department and internal stakeholders regarding scheduling, season planning, and projects in production.
- Strategic planning with the development and marketing teams to maximize earned revenue and secure long term contributed revenue through articulating the long-term artistic goals of the Artistic Director and Executive Director.
- Collaborate with the development and marketing teams to craft and maintain the brand image of A.R.T. through both project specific and overall institutional collateral.
- Directly manage and supervise the producing team by setting priorities for individual projects as well as cross seasonal initiatives and long-term relationships with artists; vision and plan the growth of this team as the intuitional programming expands.
- Initiates high-level negotiations of key contracts and agreements as needed with key stakeholders, including artists, commercial producers, co-producers, institutional partners, and union representatives.
- Identify strategic producing partners to support expenses associated with each artistic project, including commercial partners, non-profit producers, and tour presenters.
- Create long term plans for the development of new work in collaboration with the Director of Artistic Programs & Dramaturg, including financial planning, scheduling, and evaluation.
- Provide oversite and stewardship of continuing productions as necessary.
ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT

- The Producer will serve as the direct supervisor for the Line Producer and General Manager. The position serves as the de facto supervisor for general management, company management, and non-design-related guest artists.
- As part of the senior leadership team, Producer will review, analyze, and develop the strongest possible organizational structure to support the ART’s growing and evolving programmatic and operational initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Managing Director, Director of Finance, Director of Production, and General Manager on the creation of the annual operating budget for approval by the AD, ED, and Board of Trustees.
- Organize, with other members of senior staff and Harvard human resources, trainings both annually or for special circumstances, including but not limited to anti-racism, gender and sexual harassment, emergency response, etc. Such training can be driven by programming or policy.
- Collaborate with staff committees on safety, anti-racism and anti-oppression, and other topics related to adherence to organization values and the constant improvement of organization culture
LEADERSHIP
Â
- Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, led by the AD and ED, to set strategy, planning, goals, and policies for the organization.
- Serve as an external ambassador for the organization through press interviews, public speaking engagements, or attendance at industry or community convenings as needed.
- Represent the organization at board meetings and meetings with high level donors
- Represent the institution to co-producers and other institutional collaborators, both domestic and international, including partners within Harvard University.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Minimum of 10 years’ relevant work experience.
- Supervisory experience of a professional team

The ideal candidate will be a resourceful, energetic, curious, and positive professional with exceptional curatorial, artistic creative development, producing, and communication skills. They will be able to think strategically and align goals for the producing staff and the organization. They must be most comfortable acting as an institutional voice, a proactive idea generator, serving to both create and maintain a culture of transparency, clarity, and innovation within the Artistic Department and in their interactions with the rest of the organization. They need to understand and appreciate the history and legacy of A.R.T. while being a thought leader in the necessary changes being made to re-invest in the company’s vitality.

- Demonstrable experience advocating for equity, diversity inclusion, and anti-racism in their practice.
- Extensive experience in theatrical producing, including a deep knowledge of industry trends, active artists, and budgeting and resource allocation practices.
- At least ten years’ experience as a producer in theatre, film, or television.
- At least five years of experience in managing, motivating and inspiring staff to accomplish common objectives and large-scale productions.
- Demonstrable experience and advanced knowledge of producing professional theatrical productions with commercial enhancement/producers.
- Strong negotiating skills and facility with theatrical agreements and contracts, including union agreements (AEA, SDC, USA, BMA, etc.).
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills – characterized by the ability to listen, speak, and write well.Â
- Ability to lead by example and carry forward the vision and standards of executive leadership in all facets of the organization’s operations and culture.

Base Salary $160,000-$180,000. Final determination of salary will be based on an evaluation of experience, education, budget, etc.
