Job Description

Our client, an award-winning orchestra, is seeking an Assistant General Manager for a direct hire role in Atlanta, GA.

The Assistant General Manager will play a key role in assisting the  VP & General Manager with the execution of orchestra initiatives, crossing departments to ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of orchestra. This includes execution of concert production and services at the highest level, both in Symphony Hall and when presented externally.

The Assistant General Manager will support the General Manager in fostering a successful relationship with the Orchestra by assisting with personnel activities, negotiation processes, and audition procedures. The Assistant General Manager will also lead planning and implementation for special concerts, contracted services, and runouts; will supervise and support the Chorus; and will manage electronic media and Orchestra tours.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Orchestra Service Management
  • Ensures exceptional execution of all orchestra services by managing the day-to-day activities within the responsibility to the General Manager. This includes but is not limited to daily orchestra operations, library, production, and personnel departments. Includes supervising the regular dissemination of accurate day-of-show sheets and production schedules and adherence to the  orchestra’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Works with the VP for Marketing and Sales and General Manager to ensure the comfort of patrons and musicians in all service venues.
  • With Director of Operations, supervises the creation and administration of Orchestra service schedule and coordinates with Symphony Hall Live and Education teams to ensure that the Orchestra and Symphony Hall Live are utilized for optimal fulfillment of mission and revenue generation.
  • Ensures sufficient staffing during all Orchestra services.
Chorus Management
  • Ensures artistic health and welfare of the orchestra’s Chorus by overseeing planning for auditions, Symphony Hall services, and runout concerts.
  • Supervises Chorus Administrator in implementing the above activities.
Orchestra Relationship
  • Works alongside the General Manager to ensure open and effective communication between players and management and creates a positive work environment and relationship between musicians and management.
  • With personnel staff, ensures adherence to Collective Bargaining Agreement in all communications with the Orchestra.
  • Serves as staff lead for subcommittees in areas of auditions, travel, scheduling, appeals, revolving strings, and provides support for Orchestra Fellowship and Media Taskforces.
  • With General Manager, establishes and oversees orchestra personnel policies with the Director of Orchestra Personnel.
  • With personnel staff, oversees timely scheduling and successful implementation of all Orchestra auditions.
Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Provides crucial support to the management negotiating team for all National, Local, and special union agreements. Once negotiated, works with VP & General Manager to ensure all contractual obligations are met and oversees their execution and management.
  • Assists General Manager with the negotiation and management of the Orchestra members’ individual contracts and with the processing and management of grievance procedures.
  • Assists General Manager with the management of the relationship with unions
  • With the President of the Committee and General Manager, assures that agendas are established for all meetings and reviewed by all appropriate parties.

Other Earned Revenue
  • Special Concerts, Contracted Services and Runouts, and Tours: In coordination with Director of Operations, Assists General Manager with managing relationships, arrangements, and contracts with entities presenting the orchestra.

Electronic Media
  • Responsible for media (in partnership with VP Marketing and Comms) and touring.
  • Plans and implements all media projects in accordance with CBA, IMA, and any other local or national agreements to which the orchestra is a signatory.
  • Manages the Orchestra’s Electronic Media Guarantee and works with payroll to ensure proper accounting, reporting and payments.
  • Reviews royalties.
  • Manages mechanical rights and royalties due to agencies or individuals; negotiates all agreements related to the creation of EM projects.
  • Working with the Marketing and Artistic teams, develops schedule and content for the Behind the Curtain series, including special digital projects.
Touring
  • In collaboration with Director of Operations, manages all touring, including management and presenter relationships; negotiates contracts with presenters directly when needed.
  • With General Manager, ensures the excellent planning and execution of any tour within budgeted guidelines and CBA provisions.

Department and Administration
  • Serves as interdepartmental liaison between General Manager and the areas of personnel, library, operations, and production to ensure completion of necessary projects and responsibilities. Responsibilities include prepping agendas for, and leading weekly staff departmental meetings and area leads meetings, as well as disseminating weekly updates to staff and monthly updates to the Orchestra.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with operations and orchestra budgets.
  • Leads and assists with special projects as directed by General Manager.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a management position of a major or
regional orchestra or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Knowledge and experience in production and other related areas pertaining to symphonic and popular music concerts.
  • Understanding of accounting principles and budgeting.
  • Embraces a diverse set of people, thinking and styles.
  • Knowledge of classical music.
Base Salary $105,000-$130,000. Final determination of salary will be based on an evaluation of experience, education, budget, etc.
