Controller
Job Description
The Controller is the administrative manager of all financial data processing activities. This includes responsibility for all aspects of the firm’s accounting and financial management requirements in each office in which the firm operates.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Responsible for the management of the firm’s accounting systems including organization, accounting personnel, and development of systems and procedures.
- Oversees and directs all general accounting functions, including chart of accounts and general ledger, procedural aspects of the billing process, cash receipts and accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, bank reconciliation and client trust funds.
- Ensures the efficient production of the Firm’s financial reports and examines same for accuracy, observations and conclusions. Reports shall include but are not limited to accounts payable and receivable reporting, analysis of billed and unbilled time and disbursements, unallocated, trust accounting, and cash flow.
- Serves as first reviewer of firm’s  monthly financials before forwarding to Director of Finance and others for distribution.
- Assists in monitoring the inventory of unbilled time and disbursements and accounts receivable; meets with timekeepers as necessary to resolve problem cases.
- Oversees all escrow accounting functions to ensure the safeguarding of escrow funds and that trust accounts are properly maintained.
- Manages the monthly accounting calendar and ensures that all deadlines are met.
- Manages the month-end process and ensures the year end process is completed properly and timely.
- Uses and is familiar with all financial computer systems, manual and procedures, maintains and updated procedural manuals as needed.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate internal controls to safeguard assets to ensure proper accounting of transactions and to promote operational efficiency within the Accounting Department and throughout the firm.
- Ensures the maintenance of accounting retention files for required period of time.
- Prepares and analyzes special reports as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting required; CPA and/or MBA is a plus.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience to manage complex financial and banking relationships in a professional services firm. .
- 3+ years of managerial experience, either as a Controller, Assistant Controller or Senior Accountant.
- Experience within a law firm or other professional services business a plus.
- Strong knowledge of accounting and financial management principles ensuring that good business/financial practices are being followed and maintained.
- Ability to demonstrate impeccable integrity in personal and fiduciary matters.
- Positive disposition, sense of humor and strong work ethic.
- Strong technical skills including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Strong organizational skills, meticulous and diligent.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with a diverse group of attorneys and staff and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
- Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.
Salary: $110-140k/yr. Final determination of salary will be based on an evaluation of experience, education, budget, etc.
