Job Description
Overview:
The Controller should be experienced in all aspects of financial management including non-profit accounting, regulatory and financial reporting and tax filing, and the development of internal control policies and procedures. They will report to the Director of Finance and have one direct report but also work very collaboratively with a small team and cross-functionally with other departments.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares, records and approves accounting transactions within the guidelines of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and not-for-profit accounting.
- Reviews, creates and implements policies and procedures on an ongoing basis with an eye towards ensuring strong internal controls across all accounting functions.
- Manages accounts payable, including the establishment of proper routines, remittance of timely vendor payments with internal authorizations, issuance of 1099 and other tax filings at the year-end, and oversight of credit card use across the company. This position will support the Director of Finance in monitoring all cash flows and will directly supervise and mentor the Finance Associate and Accounts Payable Specialist.
- Oversee accurate and timely posting of payroll journal entries and quarterly 941 reconciliations as prepared by the Payroll Manager.
- Partner with the Director of Finance on the month-end close process including bank, box office and fundraising reconciliations, accrual and amortization entries, analytical reviews, and reporting out against budget to internal departments.
- Identify capital expenditures per policy and maintain property and equipment depreciation schedules.
- Support the year-end, insurance and other financial audits with preparation of accounting schedules, variance analysis and support of the auditors’ fieldwork requests.
- Support restricted funds, special program/project and grant accounting and identify streamlined procedures for tracking related activities accordingly.
- Proactively catch and correct mistakes, problem-solve, and identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Various special projects assigned by the Director of Finance.
Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of NFP GAAP Accounting with 4+ years of nonprofit accounting experience.
- Process improvement experience to make things operationally stronger.
- CPA or equivalent credentials are a plus, not required.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required.
- Proficiency in financial software; familiarity with NetSuite and/or Tessitura is a plus.

- Communicative, collaborative, and excited by the mission of the organization.
Compensation:
This is a salaried position with an annual range of $130,000-$140,000. Exceptional benefits include company-paid, comprehensive healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision), 403(b) with Employer Match, and Paid Time Off.
